Michael Ashkin Exhibition

Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art
An exhibition of two projects by Michael Ashkin, assistant professor of art, Cornell
Cardboard city, “Untitled (where each new sunrise promises only the continuation of yesterday).” This city, is made entirely of found cardboard and will cover approximately 1000 square feet at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, and represent nearly one linear mile in miniature scale. A conceptual component of this work is that its method of construction balance aspects of both mass production and individual variation.

Photo grid “Untitled (Long Branch Eminent Domain),” depicts the gradual destruction of a lower-middle class beachfront neighborhood and its replacement with a complex of luxury condominiums. This transformation is presented in the form of a partially completed grid of 4 x 5 inch black and white photographs where spatial and temporal coordinates become fluid.
