Queen of Carthage opera-oratorio

Performance & Music
December 3; 8pm
Sage Chapel
Presented by Ellie Cherry

Antiquity and modernity meet in musical dialogue in the premier of Queen of Carthage, an opera-oratorio by composer Ellie Cherry scored for orchestra, choir, and solo vocals. A setting of the fourth book of Vergil’s Aeneid in the original Latin, Queen of Carthage narrates the life story of Queen Dido following the arrival of the Trojans to her city in Northern Africa.

In addition to incorporating elements of ancient Greek and Roman music, Cherry’s setting offers a new feminist perspective to one of opera’s most popular themes, enveloping Vergil’s text in a sonic commentary that highlights, questions, and interprets its socially relevant subject matter.
