Performance & Music
April 18-20, 2019
Black Box Theatre, Schwartz Center for Performing Arts
Curated & directed by Samuel Blake
An Evening at the Caffe Cino seeks to explore the legacy of the Caffe Cino as both a pioneering space of Off-Off-Broadway theatre and as a site of queer performance and queer social life. While it originally opened as and remained a coffee house, the Caffe Cino became an important theatrical venue from 1958 to 1968, premiering early plays by Sam Shepard, John Guare, and Lanford Wilson among other notable playwrights.
This project uses playwright Robert Patrick’s online archive about the Caffe Cino as inspiration and source material to develop a performance that centers on the Cino’s legacy as a queer arts space.
