History of Art Majors' Society Exhibition

Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art

The History of Art Majors’ Society will explore the “classical” and “grotesque” in visual culture and fine art over a wide historical and geographical breadth, unpacking these terms as stylistic and formal qualities, theoretical tropes, and socio-political tools and texts. Through a careful selection of works from the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art's permanent collection, the Society will juxtapose the “classical” and “grotesque” visually and also theoretically with a particular interest as to when the two terms overlap — points at which the distinctions between the two become blurred. The Society’s aim is to present and analyze these loaded terms, which can take on varying qualities and characteristics depending on the time period, location, artist and audience, and then attempt to define and re-define them using a range of varied lenses.
