To Uphold the Law is a 35 minute film that explores anti-drone activism in Upstate N.Y. The film is made in collaboration with members of the Upstate Coalition to Ground the Drones and The Ithaca Catholic Worker.
Over the span of 12 months, the duration of the activists’ litigation with the Hancock Air Force Base (Syracuse, N.Y.), I followed the stories of local activists as they faced their trials, balanced family life with activism, and executed their jail sentences. The film explores competing notions of sovereignty, citizenship, patriotism, and law, as well as ideologies of nationalism and terrorism as they emerge during the ongoing activism, trials, and jail sentences the Grady sisters are going through.
As the Grady sisters keep revolving through the jail’s doors, no one knows what will happen next. Is Mary-Anne going to lose her home while in prison? Will Clare’s bail be decreased from $10,000? Will Judge Gideon finally allow in his courtroom the defender’s witnesses -- well respected specialists in international law?
