Peni Candra Rini and Jessika Kenney Residency
May 3-4, 2013
Cornell Avant Garde Ensemble (CAGE)
Peni Candra Rini, from Surakarta, Indonesia, and Jessika Kenney, from Seattle, Washington, are two singer/composer/improvisers who have distinguished themselves internationally with both the depth of their mastery of traditional musics and their adventurousness and creativity. During their two-week residency at Cornell they will develop their collaborative musical relationship with the Cornell Avant Garde Ensemble (CAGE). They will also coach students in the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble and the Cornell Music Improvisation Ensemble. The residency will culminate in two performances. The first, a concert with the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble on Saturday, May 3, will highlight the importance of vocal melody in traditional Javanese gamelan music. The second, a performance event with CAGE at the Johnson Museum of Art on Sunday, May 4, will combine sonically-oriented free improvisation with pre-composed material drawn from and inspired by traditional Javanese music. The performers will move and intermingle with the audience in the museum’s open and resonant spaces, as they respond to the work and themes of the Beyond Earth Art exhibition, thereby contributing to its interdisciplinary exploration of issues concerning the environment.
