Goldwin Smith / February 2011
Julie Phillips Brown presents THE ADJACENT POSSIBLE, a book-length, linked sequence of poems centered on the problems of consciousness, inter-subjective relation, theories of emergence, and Buddhist philosophy and practice. These thematic concerns emerge through a dialogue between two figures, in a variety of poetic modes, including free verse, invented forms, and the traditional Japanese forms of baibun, tanka, and renga.
What The Adjacent Possible asks is this: How does consciousness emerge into being and form itself, and how does one consciousness connect with another? How might language, and poetry in particular, catalyze these connections?
