The Character of Characters

Three-Channel Projection Installation

To celebrate Xu Bing’s first campus residency as an A. D. White Professor-at-Large, CCA Biennial will screen his animation, “The Character of Characters,” on the history of Chinese drawing and technology and their passage through time and environments. The Johnson Museum will stage this 5-channel video installation in the Bartels Gallery to be paired with historical scrolls and artifacts from its China collections. The first exhibition of “The Character of Characters” on the East Coast, the installation provides a unique example of the interdisciplinary excellence of this important contemporary Chinese artist whose life work has been dedicated to the durations of persistence and survival.
