Exhibition Overview
During the 2023–24 academic year, Cornell University President Martha Pollack announced “Freedom of Expression” as the first in a series of annual themes designed to orient the university around a crucial component of academia. In the artistic realm, freedom of expression is a central pillar. Similarly, the arts are central to Cornell Council for the Arts and the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (Cornell AAP), providing the foundation for a natural collaboration in the form of an exhibition showcasing the importance of artistic free expression.
CCA hosted a grant competition in the fall of 2023, requesting artistic proposals that relate to the university’s theme year. Out of 47 applications, 15 proposals from students and faculty across the university were selected for funding, and all of them will be on view during this exhibition. (Recently, the Cornell Chronicle reviewed several projects in depth.) The aim of the exhibition is to encourage a deeper appreciation for and understanding of artistic freedom of expression and its place in creating a vibrant and creative academic environment. Each project focuses on a unique aspect of self-expression in arts and culture by using a variety of mediums. As you tour the works of art, we invite you to consider the practice of free expression and envision a world without it. What might become of creativity? Would authentic art cease to exist?
