Aquariums make profit by presenting simulation for its customers. The audience gets entertained witnessing the marine life that they cannot experience day to day. Yet the simulation of the aquatic ecosystem is nothing like the reality. The experience attempts to show what happens in the ocean through the glass screen, but it is just a giant fish trap. It is not the simulation of reality. The simulation is replaced by its own experience. What we experience in the aquarium is what we experience in the aquarium not in the ocean. As the French philosopher said,
“It is no longer a question of imitation, nor duplication, not even parody. It is a question of substituting the signs of the real for the real.”
With the help of modern technology, we experience simulation everyday through screens. Like the simulation that the aquariums provide, the videos that we see in the media do not always reflect the reality. They are edited, filtered and produced. They are simulacra that threatens to replace the reality. The society has replaced the reality with symbols and signs. The human experience is getting replaced with the simulacra, like the audience observing a beluga behind the glass screen of an aquarium.
