P.I.Y. Perform it Yourself: New Music and Lecture Series

The project aims to curate a series of performances and dialogues that reimagine the process of sound, physicality, and theatricality through musical performance, D.I.Y. process, technology, and interdisciplinarity.

This spring, we invited two artists/researchers from Bangkok, Thailand, Prof. Anothai Nitibhon (artist, composer) and Noppakorn Auesirinucroch (performer, guitarist), to give us lectures, performances, and work with students from Music 3422: Perform it Yourself (P.I.Y.).

Dr. Nitibhon will give two lectures beginning April 28th: 1) Interdisciplinary Approach in Contemporary Performance (at MUSIC 3422), 2) Tradition/Transmutation: “Rebreath for Khaen and 12 Instruments” (at MUSIC 2441, Shaping Sound II), and a performance by Mr. Auesirinucroch through “Theatrical Strings,” which includes works by Piyawat Louilarpprasert and Prof. Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri. Furthermore, both guests will collaborate closely with MUSIC 3422 students for the final performance: [P.I.Y.] on May 3rd and May 5th.

Piyawat Louilarpprasert (United States, Thailand)

Piyawat Louilarpprasert’s music has been performed more than 10 countries in Asia, Europe and America. His music has drawn attention in numerous music festivals such as Lucerne Festival Academy 2016, Orkest Ereprijs Young Composer Meeting 2017, Gaudeamus Musikweek Academy 2016, Darmstadt New Music Festival 2014, London National Portrait 2015, Asian Composers League 2014, Musica y Arte: Correspondencias Sonoras 2016 and Dian Red Kechil Young Composers Residency 2015. He collaborated with several established ensembles and orchestras such as Lucerne Alumni Ensemble, Orkest Ereprijs, Oerknal!, Ensemble Platypus, Ensemble Surplus, Ensemble Mozaik, ASEAN Contemporary Ensemble, University Cincinnati Chamber Players, newEar, Siam Saxophone Quartet, Mahidol University Orchestras, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal College of Music Philharmonic Orchestra, and Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra.

Louilarpprasert has been awarded several grants and composition prizes such as The Charles Stewart Richardson Scholar Award, Fund for Classical Promotion Under the Patronage HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, Royal College of Music Concerto Competition 2017, Léon Goossens Prize 2016, Princess Galyani Vadthana Youth Orchestra Call for Score 2015, 1st prize Asia-Pacific Saxophone Academy Call for Score 2015, 1st prize SEADOM Composition Competition 2015, 1st prize Young Thai Artists Awards, Asian Composer League Call for Score 2014 and Young Composers in Southeast Asia Competition, 2013. Recently, he is selected to be Artist in Residence, offered by the Austrian Federal Chancellery in cooperation with KulturKontakt Austria in 2017 in order to work and give performances with Austrian ensembles and orchestras; Ensemble Reconsil, Ensemble Platypus and Vienna Improvisor Orchestra.

Piyawat is currently studying D.M.A. in composition at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York with Kevin Ernste, Marianthi Papalexandri Alexandri and Roberto Sierra. He has obtained his Bachelor’s degree in composition with Valeriy Rizayev and conducting with Pamornpan Komolpamorn at College of Music, Mahidol University, Thailand in 2011-15. He was awarded academic distinction on his Master’s degree in Composition and Conducting at Royal College of Music, London with Dai Fujikura, Jonathan Cole, and electronic music with Gilbert Nuono in 2017. He was also taught by Wolfgang Rihm, Olga Neuwirth, Chaya Czernowin, Helmut Lachenmann, Zygmount Krauze, Ken Ueno and many others.
