Klenengan: Gamelan from Java

Performance & Music
March 29th
WHS Memorial Hall
Presented by Christopher Miller

Experience gamelan as it is typically encountered in Indonesia, in the format known as klenèngan. More relaxed than formal concert presentations—and also more expansive, lasting for several hours— klenèngan allow the music to breathe. The musicians impress with a quiet authority, and a subtle but deep attentiveness sustained over suites that last 30 minutes or longer. Audience members are freed from the expectation of rapt attention from start to finish; one may come and go, eat, chat quietly with a friend, or listen intently, as one pleases. The six members of the featured group Ngudi Raras are some of the most highly esteemed freelance gamelan musicians currently active in Central Java. Presented in partnership with the Cornell Indonesian Association, who are organizing a concurrent Night Market with Indonesian crafts on display and food for sale, and in conjunction with the conference Sounding Out the State of Indonesian Music.

Thursday, Mar 29; 7:00pm - 10:00pm
