Performance & Music
February 18, 2013 - Feburary 24, 2013
Ellen Fullman's work resides between the fields of sound art and music. Her primary activity as been the development of the Long String Instrument, a 50-foot string instrument in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings, producing a chorus of microtonal organ-like overtones. The instrument combines Fullman's artistic expressions of everyday activities, such as walking, with a unique performance art sensibility.
The Fullman residency will take place from February 18th through the 24th, beginning with installing her instrument in Milstein's new concrete dome. Fullman's cross-disciplinary work demonstrates the physical and mathematical roots of musical intervals. In addition to workshops and demonstrations around the instrument itself, Fullman's residency will culminate in a lecture and presentation with the Cornell Avant Garde Ensemble (CAGE) and the Department of Music's Visiting Artist, Theresa Wong (Bay-area cellist and vocalist).
