About Joe Davis:
Brilliant, extreme, eccentric, genius, gifted, demented—call him any or all. Each one applies to artist/scientist, Joe Davis, a research affiliate in the Department of Biology at MIT and in the George Church Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. Winner of the Golden Nica of the Prix Ars Electronica 2012, a peg-legged artist, philosopher and the father of Bio-Art, Davis' research and art includes work in the fields of molecular biology, bioinformatics, “space art”, and sculpture, using media including but not limited to centrifuges, radios, prosthetics, magnetic fields, and genetic material.

He has also constructed sculptural installation pieces, working with laser fabrication in plastics, steel, and stone; laser teleoperator systems; and structural welding in mild steel. His teaching experience in the MIT graduate architecture program (Master of Science in Visual Studies) and in undergraduate painting and mixed media at the Rhode Island School of Design has informed his artistic practice. He has exhibited in the United States, Canada, and Europe at Ars Electronica.

This visit is part of the CCA Biennial 2012-14, "Intimate Cosmologies:  The Aesthetics of Scale in an Age of Nanotechnology."
