Yield Troubled Shadows: Bach and Modern Society pairs performances of two cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach with short lectures which will connect thematic threads from the cantatas to current issues in American and global society, including gender equality, marriage equality, and economic justice. The aim of the project is both to use classical music to spark discussion of modern issues in a responsible fashion, and also to find a context for the cantatas other than the usual settings of a church service or a concert-hall performance.
Members of the Cornell Early Music Lab and the Cornell Chamber Singers will be joined by guest soprano Megan Sharp and violinist Paul Miller for “Weichet nur betrübte Schatten” BWV 202 (“Yield Now Troubled Shadows”) and “Tue Rechung! Donnerwort” BWV 168 (“Settle the Account, Word of Thunder). Lectures will be delivered by Cornell Professors David Yearsley (Department of Music) and Robert Hockett (Cornell Law School).
