Performance & Music
April 23, 2017; 7pm
Presented by Cornell Taiko (Yamatai)
Featuring the dynamic rhythms and sounds of taiko (Japanese drumming), Yamatai's annual concert PULSE explores both the cultural origins and contemporary adaptations of the traditional art.
Taiko, which originated from Japan, is quickly establishing itself as a global art form. As the only taiko group on campus, Yamatai’s mission is to spread the art and joy of taiko to the Cornell and Ithaca community. Yamatai, although a collegiate group, brings a high level of professionalism through the performance of pieces composed by professional taiko groups, as well as skills polished through countless workshops with acclaimed taiko professionals.
PULSE is our largest event of the year, and features an impressive repertoire of 10-15 songs and multiple taiko styles. Additionally, we usually collaborate with a guest artist or a student group for one of our acts. In past concerts, we’ve collaborated with Bhangra, Absolute Zero, Chinese Music Ensemble, Lion Dance, Shimtah, BASE Productions, Phenomenon Step Team, and renowned violinist Ryu Goto. Collaborations stretch the boundaries of both parties as we work together to blend two different art forms.
