Carriage House Café Hayloft
This capstone project showcases three generations of American women composers, bringing together the worlds of gender studies, music history, and performance; by bridging the varying worlds of post-tonal Western art music, serial composition, and bluegrass/folk traditions, violinist Dr. Ariana Kim brings this unprecedented collection of pieces to Cornell and the listening public.
The concert will feature music for solo violin and violin as well as one written by American women composers spanning three generations. From the pioneering efforts of Ruth Crawford Seeger in the 1920s to the captivating nature of Augusta Read Thomas’ solo works to a bluegrass-inspired duo for violin and mandolin, a disc featuring such a unique and eclectic collection of music by women is unprecedented. Although the performing arts in the United States has made great strides in gender equity, the field of composition remains a largely male-dominated field. Joining Dr. Kim as collaborative partners on the album are two musicians, Ieva Jokubaviciute on piano and harpsichord, and Jennifer Curtis on mandolin.
